5.2 Aurora St Luke’s Medical Center:
Protocol For Transesophageal Echocardiogram



Required ICAEL Images And Text
  • Gastric short axis and long axis view
  • Standard 2 & 4 chambers view
  • Short and long axis view of Aorta with appropriate Doppler
  • Multiple Imaging planes of Mitral Valve with appropriate Doppler
  • Multiple Imaging planes of Tricuspid Valve with appropriate Doppler
  • Longitudinal view of Pulmonic Valve with appropriate Doppler
  • Longitudinal view of Right Atrium,Left Atrium and Left Atrial Appendage with appropriate Doppler
  • In cases of suspected cardiac source of emboli, appropriate use of contrast methods to evaluate for the presence of intracardiac shunting.
  • Multiple Imaging planes of atrial septum and foramen ovale with appropriate Doppler
  • Imaging of Pulmonary Veins with Doppler
  • Short axis view of the Ascending Aorta, Descending Aorta and Transverse Of Aorta
  • Long axis view of MPA and proximal portion of Right Pulmonary Artery and Left Pulmonary Artery
  • Images of the proximal inferior vena cava and superior vena cava
  • Multiple Imaging planes of atrial septum and foramen ovale with appropriate Doppler
  • Imaging of Pulmonary Veins with Doppler
Element of study quality include but are not limited to:
  • Demonstration of cardiac structure and function
  • Evaluation of atrial and ventricular septal integrity
  • Evaluation of Ascending Aorta, Descending Aorta and Aortic Arch
  • Delineation of the detail of valvular anatomty
  • Optimal recording and evaluation of spectral and color flow Doppler
  • Adherence to the laboratory specific and appropriate protocol (except for sequence)
  • Imaging of at least one right ad one left pulmonary vein with Doppler when appropriate
